La bataille des reines

Folklore and passion

La Bataille des Reines (The Battle of the Queens) is an interesting tradition in the Alpine region connected to cattle breeding. The event is based on the instinct of the breeds, particularly the Pezzata Nera breed from the Aosta Valley, the Castana one and the Hérens one from the Valais, which fight to determine the hierarchy within the herds.

The event is a celebration moment that has been passed down through generations among breeders of the Aosta Valley and attracts numerous enthusiasts from across the Alps each year.

Étroubles hosts this event every two years, providing an opportunity for gathering and entertainment. The cows, categorized by weight, engage in horn clashes to compete for the regional final and the beautifully decorated cowbells that are destined for the queens.
