The “Fiolet”

A popular sport in the Aosta Valley

Fiolet is not only a popular sport, but it is also a passion, a tradition, and a unifying element for the community in this valley.

It is one of the traditional games played with a club and a ball, an ancestor of golf, which has numerous variations throughout the region. A stone, a ball, and a wooden club. It was in the late 19th century that the fiolet challenges began in the meadows of these villages. The aim is to strike the oval ball placed on a smooth stone with a club and throw it as far as possible.

Fiolet is practiced in spring, in the meadows, before the grass for grazing emerges. It evolved from a hobby into a proper sport with its own rules and teams competing in a championship. The first championship took place in 1953.
