Col Malatrà

The described itinerary is part of the High Route No. 1, AV1. From the parking lot, you take the dirt road on the right that passes under the highway viaduct and continues on a flat path until it reaches the Devies alpine pasture. Shortly after, you take the trail on the right; this trail is flanked by dry stone walls and ascends through the meadows to the Lower Merdeux alpine pasture. From here, you walk a short part of the dirt road towards the Côtes alpine pasture and then continue on the trail that traverses the slope, leading to the Moindaz alpine pasture. Then, you ascend through green and wide meadows until you reach the Tsa de Merdeux alpine pasture. After crossing some small streams and climbing a steep grassy slope, you reach the plateau of Lake Merdeux. From here, the route gains altitude, passing by the Frassati Refuge and entering a debris basin surrounded by a rugged and impressive rocky ridge. Once you cross the basin, you traverse a long diagonal path to the left and, with some tight hairpins, you overcome the final steep section that leads to the Col de Malatrà.
